We are Plan Vivo

We all know that the communities hit hardest by the climate crisis are generally those who bear least responsibility for causing it. While the top 1% of wealthy households contribute a vastly disproportionate share of greenhouse gas emissions, rural communities and smallholder farmers all over the world are managing and protecting ecosystems that store and sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

Effectively confronting the climate crisis and delivering a just transition will require a whole range of urgent measures. Crucial among these is the creation of fair carbon markets that ensure polluters pay for the emissions they cause, and ordinary people who help protect ecosystems can benefit from the ecosystem services they provide.

That’s where Plan Vivo comes in. For over 20 years, they have been helping the very communities who are on the front line of climate crisis by providing authoritative accreditation for the C02 reductions they deliver. Plan Vivo provides projects with definitive proof of the beneficial impacts they have, with each Plan Vivo Certificate - or PVC - representing one tonne of C02 equivalent emission reductions. These certificates are then sold on the voluntary carbon market, with over 60% of the revenue flowing back to the local communities and smallholders.

With the next few years representing a make-or-break moment for the climate crisis, Plan Vivo is looking to dramatically scale up its work. Knowing that they needed a fun fast, engaging way to explain just what it is they do, Plan Vivo asked me to create an animation to tell their story and explain why their work is so important.

As you can see in the video, we settled on the idea of a lush tropical island, teaming with natural life, as the centerpiece. By combining this with a grainy, artisanal aesthetic and lots of little details, we set out to deliver an animation that felt serious and authoritative but also fun and friendly, whilst cohering cleanly with the Plan Vivo brand.

The work Plan Vivo is doing has a huge impact on local communities across the Global South whilst also helping protect the planet for all of us. And crucially, they’re achieving much more than just taking carbon out of the atmosphere. Plan Vivo-approved projects must also have a significant positive impact in terms of poverty reduction, community sustainability and the building of local capacities.

I do hope you like the video. And you know what to do if you’d like to explore creating an animation for one of your campaigns, or just to explain your organisation’s work and mission - shoot me a message at luke@insurgentvision.com and we can have a chat about how to bring it to life!
